Wynn Hamonic

Wynn Hamonic, film scholar, biographer, and animation historian, was raised in the Pacific Northwest, graduating from Kamloops Senior Secondary in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. After assisting with his parents' bakery and coffee shop for a few years learning the fine art of pastry making from his mother, he attended the University of Great Falls (UGF) in Great Falls, Montana earning scholarships and being awarded a place on the Dean's List for achieving a perfect 4.0 Grade Point Average.

After graduating with an Associates of Science Degree and Bachelor of Arts Degree in Paralegal Studies from UGF, Mr. Hamonic returned to Canada to briefly work as a paralegal in the area of civil litigation and personal injury. Thereafter, he moved to London, Ontario where he entered the Masters Degree program in Library and Information Science with the highest incoming GPA and was awarded the prestigious Lily F.W. Chiu award.

After graduating with his MLIS (in less than one year on a course fast-track basis) he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada to find work as a public librarian with the Clark County Library District serving the information needs of the gaming resort destination. Restless and ambitious, he returned to Canada after less than a year in Nevada to establish the first prospect research office at the University of Victoria (UVic) in Victoria, British Columbia. Over a two and a half year period he researched and prepared hundreds of biographies on wealthy UVic and Victoria College alumni.

During his tenure at the university, Mr. Hamonic achieved considerable success in assisting the university in locating prospects willing to give considerable funds to the institution. His most notable discovery was Peter Gustavson, then owner of Custom House Currency Exchange. He undertook in-depth research on the life and career of Mr. Gustavson and then forwarded his name to the Development Officers for their consideration as to whether the university should develop a closer relationship with Mr. Gustavson for fundraising purposes. In 2010, Mr. Gustavson donated $10 million to the University of Victoria's school of business, the university's largest donation at the time.

In 2007, Mr. Hamonic began his doctoral studies at the University of Brunel in London, England. The topic of his dissertation was the business and economic practices of Animator-producer Paul Houlton Terry (1887-1971), the producer of over 1,300 cartoons between 1915 and 1955 and founder of Terrytoons Studio the creators of the cartoon characters Mighty Mouse, Heckle and Jeckle, and Gandy Goose among others. The decision to focus on the life of Paul Terry was an easy one. Mr. Hamonic had become close friends with Mr. Terry's daughter who had graciously offered to share her family archive with Mr. Hamonic for his research purposes. Mr. Hamonic made two visits to Ms. Terry's country estate to undertake research in the family vault.

Through tremendous support from his advisor Dr. Paul Ward, in 2010 Mr. Hamonic defended his dissertation from the piercing and probing questions of esteemed animated film historian and author Paul Wells and Dr. Alisa Lebow and officially graduated with his doctorate in 2011. He next pursued an Education Diploma in Distance Learning from Thompson Rivers University – Open Learning (TRU – OL) in Kamloops, B.C. with the intention of teaching online film studies courses. He graduated from this program within 6 months in 2012.

Currently, Mr. Hamonic is working with TRU – OL in the development of film courses for what he hopes to become a film minor to be offered through the institution. The first course he is preparing is titled "Cinematic Visions of the Apocalypse", a course on end times film.

At the same time, he is preparing a multi-volume encyclopedia of animated film biographies titled "Who's Who in Animated Film". This Magnus Opus will feature in-depth biographies on practically every major and most of the minor personalities in the history of animated film, from the birth of animation to the end of the 20th Century. In addition, he is working on a definitive biography of animator-producer Paul Terry titled "Terrytoons: The Story of Paul Terry's Cartoon Factory."
